We were pretty fond of this saw's little sibling, the RS500, but Black & Decker has made a couple little changes that make this reciprocating saw one of the best choices a homeowner can make.The homeowner, weekend warrior and avid do-it-yourselfer will love this as much for the price as the power and features. Its beefed-up 8-1/2 amp draw gives it all the juice it needs for whatever task you feed it, whether you're simply making cutouts in drywall or chomping through a pipe. The variable speed is great for the wide variety of projects you'll encounter, from 0 to 2,400 strokes per minute. Also high on our list is the fact that it weighs around 7 pounds -- if you've ever hefted one of the higher-end models, you'll appreciate the light weight, especially noticeable when you're cutting over your head and in other awkward positions.
We were surprised at the generous stroke length on this saw, too, because that means more aggressive cutting and more even blade wear for longer life.
